The word Ashra in Arabic language (عشرة) means ten, for which the month of Ramadan is ideally divined into 3 set of 10 days segments,
Ashras | Days | Arabic terms | Meanings | Focus |
First Ashra | Days 1 – 10 | Rehmah(رَحْمَة) | Divine Mercy | Seeking Allah’s boundless compassion |
Second Ashra | Days 11 – 20 | Maghfirah(مَغْفِرَة) | Forgiveness | Sincere repentance (tawbah) |
Third Ashra | Days 21 – 30 | Nijat(نَجَاة) | Salvation / Protection from Hellfire | Intensified worship, seeking Laylatul Qadr |
The First Ashra of Ramadan (Days 1–10)
The first Ashra of the holy month is mainly known as the days of Mercy for Ummat-e-Muslima, which offers a sacred window where the Almighty SWT showers countless mercy and blessings on His creation, who offer and spend this sacred performance with sincerity and pure intentions. This 10 days duration is offered to believers to empty their hearts, ask for guidance and ease, and gain an opportunity to reflect on the meaningful blessings with devotion.
As stated in Surah Al-A’raf (7:156), “And My mercy encompasses all things,”
During these first ten days, Believers are asked to seek for Allah SWT’s mercy and guidance through offering sincere worship and rituals while fasting. Keep reciting Quranic verses such as Surah Al-Fatiha, Surah Al-Ikhlas and others to keep on strengthening your faith and connection with the Creator which helps you gain mercy from Him on the day of judgement and before. Invest these fasting hours in performing sunnahs and other suggested acts such as Charity, Zakat, and Sadaqah, to the needy people during Ramadan to light up their houses with joy, and yours with Barakah. Offer sincere salah and most importantly stick through Taraweeh prayers during the sacred month of Ramadan and experience the beauty of Islam that lays a spiritual grounded foundation for the rest of Ramadan. The Second Ashra of Ramadan
Then comes the second Ashra of the holy month of Ramadan. These days are also known as the “days of forgiveness” or Maghfirah. This is the ideal time when believers deeply connect with the Almighty through various religious performances in order to ask for forgiveness and repentance. It is the divine time to ask for forgiveness from all your previous mis-steps and sins. People who open their hearts in front of Allah SWT and seek for his mercy in the first ten days, move towards the next ten days to gain forgiveness from their shortcomings.
Surah Az-Zumar (39:53): “Do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.”
This verse highlights that ask Allah Almighty for his pardon and mercy, surely He is the one who forgives after experiencing the sincere request from His creation. There is no sin greater for the Creator SWT to forgive, it depends on the way of asking of the believer.
During this Ashra, Muslims are suggested to practice sincere forgiveness and Tawbah with heart to get their sins resolved and never to return back to the wrong path. Keep reciting quranic phrases and small ayats such as “Astaghfirullah” throughout the day to get your heart cleansed and renew one’s spiritual state. The term fasting does not only mean to stay yourself away from food and drinks, but the true essence of this sacred performance lies in the repentance that one asks with heart to experience the mercy of Almighty.
A powerful supplication to recite during the second Ashra of Ramadan is,
“Astaghfirullah al-‘Adheem alladhi la ilaha illa Huwa al-Hayy al-Qayyum wa atubu ilayh.”
The Last and Third Ashra of Ramadan
The last Ashra of Ramadan which is also called “Days of Salvation (Nijat). Which helps you get rid of the hellfire through your divine obligations and rituals. The most important thing of this Ashra is the night of Decree (Laylatul Qadr), described in Surah Al-Qadr as “better than a thousand months.” There are various believers around the world who choose to deepen their spiritual faith during the month of Ramadan with blessed travelling to the sacred cities of Saudi Arabia, with Cheap Umrah packages from UK, offering an exclusive stay with convenient services that makes your holy month performance even more uplifted.
